Board of Directors Nominations for 2024 to 2027

The nominations for Board of Directors is now open.

Deadline: September 15, 2023

The JPS Board of Directors invites nominations for new members who have prior professional service experiences, are active in JPS or contribute to its publications and development, are accomplished in their own fields, and would bring diverse representations to the Board.

We seek nominees who have been active in the Society and/or who are scholars in areas of special concern to the Society. We are committed to diversifying and internationalizing our Board and interested in nominees from underrepresented groups to establish reasonable balance across areas of interest and other demographic considerations. We are also interested in nominees who have skills or expertise in areas of social media, office IT, and outreach.

The JPS Board of Directors is the governing body of the Society. The Board members are directly involved in

  • supporting an open forum for the presentation and discussion of developmental construction of human knowledge;
  • participating in the Society’s operational routine;
  • shaping the Society’s vision and future;
  • using their knowledge and experience to promote and transform the Society.

Board members serve a three-year term and their service work entails two full Board meetings in the fall and spring and multiple or regular committee meetings throughout the calendar year. Each Board member will be expected to contribute to the service work of two committees and to serve as a committee chair after one-year experience on one of the two committees.

NOMINATION FAQs

How do I solicit nominations for myself or for others?

Build relationships with current and former Board members and discuss your desire to get involved. If you can identify colleagues and mentors who are involved in governance or regularly participate in JPS’s activities, you can ask them to write a nomination letter on your behalf.

If the person I am interested in nominating is unsure whether they want to be a board member, can I submit their nomination before they decide?

Nominees must agree to serve on the board before they can be nominated.

Is there a word limit for the statement required to submit a nomination?

We ask that the statement be between 500 and 1000 words, but most importantly the statement should address

  • Nominee’s relevant prior professional service;
  • Prior participation in JPS and contribution to its publications and development;
  • Key intellectual contributions to the field;
  • Diverse representations the candidate would bring to the Board.
  • Skills in areas of social media, office IT, and outreach.

.

What happens after the nomination deadline?

After the deadline, the Nominations Committee will review all nominations. The committee will then deliberate and put together a slate of candidates for the Board of Directors to review and vote on. Once the slate is approved, the nominees will receive an email asking if they still wish to serve on the Board of Directors.

I am an emerging scholar. Can I serve on the board?

It depends. Board members are regularly well established in their fields and have accumulated professional service experiences This is not the case for most emerging scholars. However, an emerging scholar is routinely appointed to serve on the executive committee. Please let the Executive Committee know if you are interested!

I am a junior faculty member (e.g., assistant professor). Can I serve on the board?

We have a general concern about pre-tenure workload and the ability to fully commit to serving on two committees if elected, but that does not prevent a junior faculty member from being nominated or serving on the board, especially if they have special skills that the board is hoping to gain.

I am an independent scholar. Can I serve on the board?

Yes.

Do Board members have to be developmental psychologists or in any particular field to serve?

No, nominees do not have to be in any particular field.

Do nominees have to have had some prior committee experience (or JPS involvement) before serving on the Board of Directors?

There is no requirement that nominees will have served JPS in any specific activity. We expect that nominees have previous JPS involvement (including attending and/or presenting at our conference), but leadership potential can be accrued in various ways, including experience in other societies.

Can only JPS members be nominated?

Current JPS membership is not required for nomination. However, any elected individual must agree to join JPS for their term.

I am not a JPS member. Can I submit a nomination for the JPS board of directors?

You must be a current JPS member to submit a nomination for the JPS board of directors.

If my nominee is not elected can I nominate them again?

Yes, you may nominate them again for the next term.

Can I nominate someone who is currently a board member to extend their term?

No, but they can be nominated for the following term (the next year).
